Great article, Aki! Thanks for taking the time to post. I’ll definitely check out the movie. It’s hard to comment on the review without watching the film. But yeah, Asians in New York — they’re big! And no one ever talks about them! The Oscar-nominated film “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” tells a little bit of that history and about the long history of racial discrimination against Chinese seeking loans, discrimination that eventually paved the way for small community banks including the Chinese-owned “Abacus” who was targeted during the 2008 financial meltdown even while big banks weren’t.
